Forever in Our Hearts

Patrick James (PJ, Pat) Mentzer, proud resident of Lovettsville, Virginia, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2023, after demonstrating unwavering bravery battling colon cancer since his original diagnosis in January of 2021. He was at home, with his loving wife by his side. He held on to all he held dear until the very final hours - with an unbelievable “end of life rally” lasting a full week and a day. It’s no surprise that he continued to focus on his loved ones during his final weeks of life. He was not afraid of death - only of leaving his family to learn to live without him.

Born in Leesburg, Virginia on June 29, 1985, he was the son of James Marlowe Mentzer and Phyllis Anna Mentzer. Patrick grew up running wild and free on his family property in Loudoun County, riding his four wheeler and making mischief of all kinds. He loved helping his dad on the farm, and volunteered running Fire and Rescue alongside him during his high school years. Patrick served as a combat medic in the United States Army and built a civilian career in aerospace with Northrop Grumman Corporation, with his latest role as an Integration and Test Manager.

Patrick lived for his family. He married Lorelai on September 23, 2017 at Claytor Lake State Park in Virginia. Patrick and Lorelai started newlywed life unconventionally, living in a 38 foot travel trailer adjacent to his mother’s home. While it was meant to be very temporary, they absolutely loved camper life together and stretched it out to 2.5 years before settling into their home in Lovettsville. Patrick’s work ethic and devotion to his marriage made “camper life” a fairytale. He was so proud of all they achieved through creative planning and teamwork, and that carried through to parenthood and his cancer battle.

They added their first baby (a working line German Shepherd), Gunnar Klaus Mentzer, to their family in June of 2020. On August 14, 2021, they welcomed their son, James Marlowe (Jamie, JJ) Mentzer. Patrick was destined to be a father and devoted himself to loving his son and wife through every step of his health battle.

Patrick took on Lorelai’s love of Christmas, and was determined to outdo every house in the town of Lovettsville with his Christmas light display. During the first year in their home, he rented a lift to install Christmas lights himself and earned an award for the best new resident light display. During his final Christmas, he planned a light display so beautiful with determination to win the town’s Bing Crosby Award for Lorelai. On the night the judges drove by, he was outside in full Santa attire with a hot cocoa and candy cane station. They won the award - and that is a perfect example of the lengths this man went to for his family. His favorite Christmas movies included Its A Wonderful Life and White Christmas. He proposed at the National Christmas Tree and loved the holiday season.

Patrick's love for his son knew no limits. You would often find them in matching outfits, solely by Patrick's choosing. He described the little nook in his arm as Jamie's favorite seat, stole him away for bath time every night, and snuggled him to sleep at least a thousand times, happily singing every song from Disney's Moana and Encanto. He was so incredibly proud and amazed by Jamie's existence, and his spirit is certain to live on through Jamie.

Gunnar was always by Patrick’s side. If Patrick could have switched careers, he would have been a dog trainer in an instant. The dedication, patience, and understanding he poured into molding Gunnar into the goodest boy was apparent to all who witnessed it.

Patrick took his role as an uncle just as seriously. He was so happy to have had the opportunity to share a home with his nieces, Alexa and Sianna, during their childhood and was so incredibly proud to watch them blossom into their own identities as they grew. Patrick’s other niece, Payton, absolutely adored him. His amazing ability to bond with the littles in his life earned him the nickname “everybody’s uncle” - he was so fun-loving and such a child at heart.

Patrick had an uncanny ability to make a friend out of every person he encountered. He never met a stranger. He meant so much to so many people — friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, nurses, and more. Patrick undoubtedly left an impact on every life he touched.  He didn’t restrict his definition of family to those tied to him by relation; the man embraced all of those he loved as family and had a remarkable stream of visitors in his final days.

He maintained his optimism and resiliency through to the very end, never letting cancer rob him of the joy he found in his life and family. He demonstrated unbelievable mental and physical fortitude, and continued acts of service for loved ones and strangers even up to the very day of his death. He had incredibly high standards for himself and was always working toward the next step in life. He was always in the kitchen or over the grill, whipping up the most amazing recipes for his family and friends.

Though Patrick devoted nearly all of his time to his family in his final years, when there was a spare moment you might have found him enjoying bourbon, beer, Zac Brown Band, hunting, fishing, trucks, off-roading, working on vehicles, or spending the day at a shooting range. He was amazingly selfless, giving, and kind. He showed up for those he loved and rarely devoted any of his energy to things for himself.
